Tommy Guerrero Interview
Caught up with Tommy Guerrero to talk about his new album that's dropping tomorrow with a record-release party Thursday night in SF.
New project—let's hear about what we're in store for?
The album's called No Mans Land. Sort of a break-beat spaghetti-western noir trip. I think it has some licensing potential: skate vids, docs, films, etc. Bring it on.
Is this a solo project, or did you get some additional musicians to help out?
Yeah, another DIY album. Money Mark plays harmonica on one tune, Marc Capelle plays horn on a tune and Matt Rodriguez on a bit of percussion. Bass, gituar, keys, some percussion sounds, etc. by the trio: me myself and I!
Why No Mans Land?
It has a sort of forlorn feel to it. Dave Kinsey, the artist who designed the cover, I think his work has a similar feel.
Is song number three, "The Stranger," a tribute to Julien?
Ha! No, but it'd be rad to create an all Julien piece using that tune.
Is there gonna be some type of record-release party or show?
Yeah, on the 24th of this month at Brick & Mortar in SF. My brother's band El Diablitos will be the opener. Great surfy stuff. The album drops digitally on the 22nd. First album on my label Too Good. Next will be my brother's album.
WIth all your years of traveling through skateboarding and playing music, what are the top three cities you've visited?
Hmm, that's a hard one. I was just in Europe and I love the coast of Spain. I want to retire there, like, next year! NY, of course. Berlin is great because it's open to pretty much anything.
Where have you not been that you're wanting to go?
Madagascar. See the lemurs. I don't know, maybe Chile? I haven't explored South America.
What are you more happy doing: Slappin' da bass or shreddin' the guitar?
Ha! Slappin' the curbs, fool!
Facebook or Instagram?
Corndogs and Cheez Whiz. I want to start a social-media site called Kookbook.
Hashtag or emoticon?
Hash browns and Emocore.
What's up with the rumors of Free Beer playing an upcoming DLXSF anniversary party with Drunk Injuns?
It's true! Man, it's gonna be sketchy. McRads gonna play as well. Serious grandpa rock!
Gimme the Tommy Guerrero dream skateboard session: where and with who?
Jim, Mic and Julien at DMV with a case of beer.
Now take that dream session to the club. What dudes playing with you in what city and what club?
Bill Withers—any place, any time.
